New or not?

Posted by Vera Haller on Jan 31, 2008 under: journalism education, online news

Here is a column worth reading. It’s by Steve Klein  in the Poynter Institute’s E-Media Tidbits blog. He makes a very good case for journalism schools to stop referring to journalism on the Web as “new media.” Here’s the link. You have to scroll down to the entry, “Revenge of the ‘Web people.’”

This is a great column. In the near future, the most desireable journalists will be those with an array of skills - not just a knowledge of either web or print media.

I think it is interesting that there is competition between the print, broadcast and online journalists, especially since online journalism is the future.

I also think that if there is a shortage of editors, then those involved in online media should learn how to copy edit. This would increase the journalistic standards of many of these online media publications.

There should be less complaints of poor journalism skills and editing in online news–it’s just as prevalent in broadcast and print news! Would the New York Times have have a regular section dedicated to corrections otherwise?!?

I think that publications like the New York Times are smart in realizing their online site can be a great asset. I just wish other publications like the Daily News realized this as well, and revamped their online infrastructure.
