A must-read
Posted by Vera Haller on Mar 4, 2008 under: multimedia, newspapers, online news, television, video
A new poll shows that younger people (those under 30) are increasing turning to the Internet for their news. No big surprise, but this survey on the state of the news industry by Zogby International really drives home the point.

It definitely is not a surprise that so many young people turn to the Internet, but I think it’s something we should be more wary of. It is definitely faster and more convenient, but I do think something is definitely lost. Most of us would hesitate to give up books in traditional form for books read on the computer, so it’s strange that we don’t think twice about reading the news only online.
The survey shows that 64% of participants are dissatisfied with the quality of journalism. Dissatisfaction is a very ambiguious stat because it is 1. hard to please everyone across the board and 2. people take their moods into surveys; dissatisfaction at work could lead to a negative responses…I still like print media for local and national news, but sites like RealGM.com are great for sports because they collect the stories from all of the nation’s wires…Maybe they should stop calling it a “crisis” and further embrace the changes.
Each generation has become more and more computer oriented and we can do almost anything online so it’s seems natural, that more young people are getting their news from websites. We are already there shopping, paying bills, “googling,” and even ordering dominos ( I was shocked to find this out recently). I personally enjoy reading the actual paper. I like to flip through page by page and see all the articles at a glance, unlike the web where you sort of have to know what you wanna read and navigate to it.
I’m not surprised at all. It’s much easier not to mention cost efficient to save a buck or more and read the news online. Most of the big Newspapers upload their printed articles online anyway… its the same information.
I have to admit that i like to look at news on television in the mornings while i get ready for school. It’s easier to do that than read…cant read and get dressed. If there is audio and video online with up to date news..id love that. What i do love about reading news online is the fact that i can just google the headline im interested in and then i can read all different news sources so that i am not biased in my opinions derived from the articles.
