Guilty! I read the news online more often than buying the Times. I find it more convenient and plus it’s free :) And also because the NYTimes delivery is way beyond horrible! I only received four issues within 3 weeks. I had to call them up and tell them I haven’t been receiving the paper, so they said they would credit me back and restart the cycle next month again. The guy was nice about it but I think this happens very often to other people, so I DO NOT suggest ordering the NYTimes. Maybe it’s one of those mini scams where they want people to extend their subscriptions, who knows?

I agree with Gar. I also find myself browsing news websites as opposed to actually purchasing a newspaper. It is more convenient than carrying a newspaper around. It is also cheaper. Why buy newspapers when you can access the same information at your own computer?

I thought it was interesting that journalists now have to focus on making money and providing a how-to-guide to its readers. Like we have discussed in class, it doesn’t seem to matter how important a news story is as it only gets attention until the next big one comes up.

Now that journalism seems to be refining itself, i can’t decide whether it is still as appealing anymore. How secure are your jobs if these media houses are consistently letting people go if enough money isn’t being made? Does online journalism offer more stability or is it just the latest fad?

It’s funny last year, I subscribe to the NY Times paper copy, and I never received the first copy of the paper. I though it was because I lived in a building in the Bronx, but reading Gar posting makes me realized that it seems to be something common on their delivery system!
Its hard to tell what would be the future of Journalist in this every day changing era, where most of the people I know either read their news on the internet which is fee (for instance the paper copy of the NY Times is about $1 to $1.50 weekdays and weekends $3 compare to their free digital version) or watch the TV early in the morning also before going to bed. It might well be that it is more convenient to browse on the web and read the news that are relevant to you rather than carrying a large, difficult to unfold, heavy paper around.

Every morning when I get on the bus, one of the first things I do is take out my iphone and read up on the latest news on various news websites. I even used my iphone to read the entire article for this blog. If it wasn’t so readily available to me, I would have to watch the news on TV or buy a newspaper in the morning. But since we live such hectic lives already, saving a few extra minutes in the morning is great. I believe the technology is out there and ready whenever the major news providers are ready to take advantage of this new frontier. As the article said, so many of the top executives at these news and advertising agencies are too old or too unfamiliar with using online sources. Therefore, it is up to the younger generations, our generation, to take charge and figure out a way to make these websites profitable, efficient, and effective.

So I definitely agree that the world of journalism is being taken over by the web. It is easily accessible to everyone now, whether on laptops or phones. Just about once a week I buy the Times because when I’m at work I have the time to really sit and read through it. When I go online for the Times (which is basically the rest of the week) I only read important articles and find myself missing out on the reviews of museum exhibits in the arts and I barely look at the metro section. Everyday I make sure I look over the am new york or daily news because one is free and the other my mother automatically buys. Even though I take advantage of going online for my news, I feel like I miss out on the news that maybe isn’t so major and that articles I really enjoy, instead of the ones I feel like I have to read to keep up with the world and nation.
Unfortunately online journalism is not profitable yet and I predict journalists will take a major hit from the increasing technology. However I think that as technology grows, so will ideas for ways of making it profitable or even subscriber based (like the WSJ online).

We, that is my husband and myself, still prefer to have a whole printed paper & be able to read and later perhaps re-read something of special interest, holding on to our papers for usually a week before they go to recycling. Of late, Delivery has been terrible whereas commercial places Always receive their papers, home delivery is treated 2nd class as they already have our $ & one must “reach out & touch someone” to get the necessary service, which just should not be so necessary but that seems to be the game these days. Ut;s a shame as we simply do not enjoy reading the articles on the web, as it is so fleeting……..Thank you, Clarita R.
