Trouble brewing on the field

A New York Times article today describes an interesting battle brewing between the sports world and the news world. Developments in the way sports stories are reported is causing tension between the teams and the news organizations covering them.

According to the article, with bloggers detailing every word and news Web sites posting slideshows and videos, sports executives are looking to limit this ever-growing coverage - and drive fans to their team Web sites.

So the Times asks, “Who owns sports coverage?” Some sources in the stories suggest that these disputes may end up in court.

    I understand that major league sports franchises are upset with the amount of visual coverage the news has been using and I do not blame them for wanting to limit those uses. I would like to believe it is because they want to keep their games sacred and players protected. However, sports coverage is a multi-billion dollar industry. You can not help but wonder if the owners and executives of these teams are trying to keep a tighter grip on the amount of coverage allowed outside of their teams websites in order to generate their own income. I believe, even though stadiums are produced from the tax-payer’s dollars, that those tax-players are fans of certain teams in certain sports leagues themselves. And the cardinal rule of being a fan is being loyal to your team or sport. Take Nascar for instance. That is American capitalism at it’s best! ( At least in my opinion). People who support the driver of the Lowes sponsered cars would never be seen shopping in Home Depot. Or if they support the driver of a Pepsi sponsored car, they definetly won’t be seen drinking Coke. I think if tensions being to rise between the news media and sports teams, we may in fact see a trial in the Supreme court to cast a verdict because neither side seems to want to step down!
